Parents are being warned to return a range of popular breast pump accessories after a fault was found that could lead to electric shocks.
Manufacturer Medela said on Monday that detachable wall plugs which connect to five breast pumps were being recalled as a matter of urgency.
The detachable wallplug connects to an AC power adaptor to charge the pump. The firm has said the bracket could expose live parts.
"Medela has received isolated reports of the detachable wall plug breaking into two parts, thereby potentially exposing two metal terminals and creating a risk of electric shock," the company said in a statement.
The plug is sold separately but also as an included accessory with breast pumps. The plugs supplied with the following pumps are affected:
• Swing: model no 030.0040 • Swing Premium: model no 030.0060 • Swing Essentials: model no 030.0053 • Swing Maxi: model no 040.0011 • Freestyle: model no 042.0014 • Stand-alone AC Power adaptor (for Swing Maxi and Freestyle): model no 099.0273
The models listed have been sold in New Zealand via various online retailers, including Babycity.co.nz and Babyfactory.co.nz.
The models included in the recall list often sell for over $300 each.
The company said not all wall plugs were affected.
"There are three types, which can be seen in the photo below. Only the plug on the right is affected and it can be identified because it has no markings on its back. If the detachable wall plug has a white dot or markings on the back of it, then it is not affected and does not need to be returned."

Medela said the pumps can still be used; it is only the adaptor that needs to be returned.
The medela.co.nz website advises customers not to return the product to stores, but rather contact the company directly to be sent a replacement charger.
It also says people should stop using the affected adaptors immediately.
The recall is currently listed on the Medsafe website, which advises consumers to contact Fisher and Paykel to arrange for collection and replacement of the rechargeable wall plug via email (NZ.CustomerServices@fphcare.co.nz) or phone (0800 633352).
