Australian consumers continue to buy new digital cameras, televisions and personal computers in large quantities as their desire for the latest technology outweighs economic gloom.
Australians bought 6.56 million digital devices in the first six months of the year worth A$2.8 billion ($3.6 billion), according to a survey commissioned byconsumer electronics giant Canon.
The latest Canon Consumer Digital Lifestyle Index said the number of units sold was slightly higher than a year earlier, and prices were 14 per cent lower on average.
Canon Australia director of consumer imaging Jason McLean said consumer spending was driven by the desire to upgrade digital devices and embed the latest technology in more aspects of daily life.
Upgrades accounted for 44 per cent of camera purchases, 40 per cent of televisions and 39 per cent of personal computers.
Consumers wanted better quality cameras, faster personal computers and innovative formats such as 3D and Blu-ray.
LCD televisions were in demand the most, followed by digital cameras. It also found 3D televisions and "smart" televisions were increasingly popular.
Smart TVs now account for 20 per cent of total television market volumes.
More consumers were making purchases through the internet, and 29 per cent were using their smartphone for online shopping compared to 15 per cent a year earlier.
