$200m tower nearly finished

Most lower-level scaffolding and the tower crane have vanished from Auckland's new $200 million Deloitte Centre on Queen St.

Tim Pope, Brookfield Multiplex development division regional director, said big changes to the site in the last few weeks gave people an idea of how the finished building would look, particularly around the street-level areas which are gradually being uncovered.

In three months, the BNZ will shift into the 21-level centre at 80 Queen St between Shortland St and Fort St.

Pope said the building was now completely weathertight on all levels.

"Since the middle of last month, the construction team have removed the second tower crane, completed removal of the reconciliation wall scaffolding, started the new Fort St canopy and progressed the Queen St canopy," Pope said.

Inside, work is also continuing apace.

"The team has continued the internal fitout on BNZ floors to an advanced stage of completion," he said. Framing and partitioning fit-out works have progressed to level 15 on the Deloitte floors."

During July and August, the construction team would finish the canopy structures over the streets and the main lobby would be nearing completion, Pope said.

"All passenger lifts will be operational, the soft fit-out - with furnishings and fittings - to the BNZ floors levels one to eight will be well underway, the Deloitte fit out will have progressed on levels nine to 18 with carpet having been installed on the lower levels," Pope said.

The site manager is Paul Feltham, Brookfield Multiplex's construction divisional manager who has worked on Sylvia Park Shopping Centre, Albany Junior High School, The Statesman Apartments and Viaduct Point Apartments.

Pope said scaffolding had also been removed from the reconciliation wall designed to acknowledge the junction between the new tower and the existing Jean Batten Building facade.

The tower was designed by two firms of architects: Woods Bagot and Warren & Mahoney.

The Deloitte Centre is fully leased and has a five-star Green Building Council rating.
