A bright idea to re-label and sell cardboard boxes for discontinued manufactured products led Kevan Rix-Trott to set up Carton Brokers.
And that has led to bigger and better innovations.
Rix-Trott decided that rather than going to waste, corrugated cardboard inlay in boxes could be developed as an alternative to the ugly
black plastic weed restrainers that sometimes strangle plants.
With funding from Industry New Zealand, he set about creating an organic weed mat, Korromatt, which is injected with fertiliser so plants are nourished and weeds suppressed.
Since then he has devised a way to use the material as liners in terracotta pots so they do not soak up water.
Rix-Trott says there are some promising signs of sales in both Australia and Singapore.
