Seventy-three primary and intermediate schools have registered to take part in the "Make headlines" New Zealand Herald school programme.
The programme is open to schools north of Taupo and aims to give children "hands-on experience" in using what they learn in the classroom to produce a newspaper.
Teachers are being asked to
register their schools for the programme, in which students are asked to write stories about their local community, take photographs and design their own 10-page publication.
Teachers who register receive a range of free resources to help them deliver a "fun and engaging" learning programme, including a newspaper template and information pack.
The competition runs during term three of the school year, with the winning publications announced in the Herald on October 23.
The programme manager, Nandeeta Rambisheswar, said 73 schools from the Bay of Plenty and Waikato north had registered since the programme launch on Tuesday, and there had been many inquiries from teachers wanting more information.
The 10 publications judged to be the best will win $10,000 for their schools.
The annual programme is being sponsored by Mercury Energy, Westfield, Freedom Air, Foodtown, 5+ a Day, Roadshow, ASB, Norske Skog, PlayStation and Nissan.
Registrations for the programme will be received until June 28.
