On camera on the buses

Security cameras are to be installed in four Stagecoach buses across the region as part of a six-month trial of on-bus closed circuit television. The trial, initiated by the Auckland Regional Transport Authority working with Stagecoach, follows a spate of violent robberies - five drivers were seriously assaulted over three months. Stagecoach operations director Warren Fowler says drivers shouldn't have to worry about doing a night trip or a trip in a certain area. ``With these cameras they know we can track any person whomisbehaves. We also want our customers to feel safe.'' Buses with cameras will travel from the Wiri depot in South Auckland, mainly along Great South Rd, through areas such as Panmure, and into the CBD. The transport authority and Stagecoach will monitor the reactions of drivers and passengers to the trial.
