The Birkenhead Northcote Community Facilities Trust has spent five years in "temporary" lodgings at the hall in the face of opposition from the local residents association and returned servicemen.
Last week, North Shore City Council voted 7-6 to offer the trust a secure tenure in the Rodney Rd hall.
Later, Mayor Andrew Williams - who had told The Aucklander the trust would be out by Anzac Day - returned salvo by putting aside $250,000 to provide appropriate premises for the trust.
Trust board member and city councillor Ann Hartley says $250,000 would be about right to do up the war memorial hall.
"The mayor has other ideas, but I think he will find that it's already too crowded at his alternative at Birkenhead Memorial Domain."
Northcote trust can stay at hall - for now
