Motorists asked not to pay window washers

Police are asking the public to withhold from paying window washers at South Auckland intersections.

Counties Manukau Police has received over 20 calls complaining about the window washers so far in October, with another 34 complaints received in September.

Police and partner agencies including Auckland Council are looking to address the problem of window washers as soon as possible.

"From a Police perspective it would be helpful if motorists did not pay the window washers," says Counties Manukau Police Prevention Manager Inspector Richard Middleton.

"The window washers are a hazard at intersections and the activity should not be encouraged with payment."

Police expect that without payment, the window washers will be deterred and will stop bothering motorists and putting themselves in the line of danger by standing in traffic at busy intersections.

Advice to motorists to deter window washers:
• keep your windows up and doors locked
• make it clear that you do not wish to have your window washed • if your window is washed without your consent, do not pay the washer

Police are regularly patrolling the most prominent intersections (Cavendish/Lambie and Cavendish/Great South Road) in an effort to move window washers along.

Motorists should call Police if any window washer acts aggressively or is behaving in a dangerous manner amongst traffic.
