I have been running the Bangladesh NZ Friendship Society as president for last two years with only small donation of $1200 from community board funds towards our only Bangla Quaterly Magazine, Ayojon. This is only magazine in Bangla in this region. It is ridiculous amount where we need at least $3000 per issue to print and distribute to our members except the cost of volunteers' expenditures.
We have a weekly radio programme, each broadcasting cost is around $60 - yearly around $3000. The society has no fund to run this programme. Unfortunately, it is the only Bangla radio programme in New Zealand!
We also have Bangla library, which is eventually non functioning due to lack of funds.
The society celebrates different programmes like International Mother Language Day or Pahela Boishakh (Bangla New Year) regularly along with other cultural and educational programmes. International Mother Language Day is an international programme. Unfortunately neither Government nor other agencies came forward to offer any assistence for this programme.
We had applied to different agencies for funds for our programmes and office maitenance cost with all relevent papers; unfortunately they turned us down while noting that there were many needy organisations over our request.
Our contribution to the society is much morethan we receive from funding agencies.
Under our CMRD (Centre for Migrant Research and Development) programme, we trained our umployed people. Currently, we have no unemployed engineers.
The society runs a women's programme but it is now stopped due to lack of funding.
We actively participate in crime reduction and domestic violence. We have been trying to organise a community school under the CMRD program but we could not get any funds for last two years, despite our several attempts.
Auckland City Council had been supporting our accommodation budget for our Grey Lynn premises, but stopped supporting us for last two years without any apparent reason.
We do have all legal status (IRD, Charities Commission Approval), but they turned down our application quite few times during last two years. We are now to a point to stop all our beneficial acitivities as we do not have any resources to run our programmes.
