A fire broke out at a Manurewa business today. St John was called to the fire on Great South Road at 12.25pm.
Firefighters are now working to extinguish the last of the fire dampen hotspots so they can get inside and establish how and why it started.
It is not thought to be suspicious.
The fire appears to have started in a ground level building in the two storey block - either in an Indian restaurant or massage studio.
It then spread up thorough the floor to the second level.
About 13 fire trucks were at the scene including a breathing apparatus unit. Ambulances and paramedics were on standby but had not treated or transported anyone.
A worker at Manurewa Trust Health Care said the fire was across the road.
He could see plumes of black smoke, several fire engines, and groups of people gathering outside.
