Major road works are being undertaken along Esmonde Road leading into Lake Road, just as people are returning to work, and will still be going when children are returning to school.
The road works, which last night closed off the entire southbound side, and diverted southbound traffic into one ofthe lanes designed for those heading towards Lake Road, is creating major hassles even with the lighter volumes of traffic.
Heading into Devonport at around 7pm, the queues of traffic were substantial causing delays of at least 25 minutes along the stretch of road between Barrys Point Road and Lake Road.
Esmonde Road is being resurfaced and Auckland Transport spokesperson Wally Thomas said the work was supposed to begin on January 9, but rain prevented that.
He said the work is highly dependent on a spell of fine weather, and heavy rain had meant a delay to the works' start was unavoidable.
Mr Thomas says it was disappointing the project couldn't start as early as anticipated when traffic volumes on the busy road are seasonally low.
He said the completion date of February 9 was also dependent on the weather.
