Auckland's first cat café is one step closer to reality after reaching its fundraising target on Kickstarter.
The Cat Lounge is due to open later this year on Auckland's North Shore after successfully raising $36,463 on the crowdfunding platform.
The campaign had 442 backers who claimed rewards from coffeeand cake to hoodies and even a job as a cat cuddler.
At the cafe diners will be surrounded by 10 to 15 cats and kittens rescued from shelters, while LOL cat clips will play on a non-stop loop.
Owners Mike Chapman and Vicky Jones, self-confessed 'crazy cat people' have plans for a space big enough to be divided into a cafe serving coffee and baked goods, with the other half a 'cat lovers dream'.
According to their campaign pledge the cafe will work with local car rescue shelters to find suitable cats which 'thrive in the company of people and other cats' and the animals will have regular vet checkups to make sure they are happy and healthy.
The pair say that food preparation will be carried out in a "cat-free environment" to maintain health standards.
Scientific research regarding human/cat interaction has shown significant health benefits.
