Sophie Henderson has always wanted to see someone pitch a tent on stage. That, coupled with her love of camping, motivated her to co-write I Heart Camping with co-actor and boyfriend Curtis Vowell.
The theatre piece is an "unromantic" comedy that director Cameron Rhodes describes as "a slice of Kiwi
life".
Rhodes, who taught Henderson at Unitec, admits he was sold as soon as he read the script.
"I'm interested in new writing and particularly like encouraging New Zealand work. It is very cleverly written and it showcases Sophie's great ear for dialogue."
To ensure authenticity, Titirangi residents Henderson and Vowell have based their larger-than-life characters on the people they've met on their camping adventures.
"Recreating the dynamics between the novice and veteran camper has been particularly interesting," says Henderson.
"I also love the way camping puts everyone, rich or poor, on an equal playing field."
Besides seeing the play and characters take shape, Henderson is relishing working with best friend Michelle Blundell.
"It's been three years since we worked together but, because we know each other so well, we're able to work really quickly," says Blundell. "We're really honest and direct, which allows us to get the best out of each other."
Besides the camaraderie, working with a topic so close to Kiwis' hearts has been a treat for Henderson.
"I like the fact that it's something practically everyone in the audience will be able to relate to. And we hope the play appeals to anyone who's ever pitched a tent."
