I am constantly amazed how film-makers can take what appears to be a very child-focused movie and also give it enough depth and secondary meaning to keep parents amused.
Hoodwinked Too: Hood v Evil is one such film and I was pleasantly surprised by how entertainingit was.
A sequel to the original Hookwinked (2005), this version brings back our heroine, Red Riding Hood, and just about every fairy-tale character you can recall.
There's a witch, a big bad wolf (not so bad here), Hansel and Gretel (like you've never seen them before), three little pigs, dwarfs, Cinderella ... the list goes on. And for viewers with a few more years under their belts, there are modern movie references to Goodfellas and The Silence of the Lambs.
Red Riding Hood works for the Happy Ever After Agency and it is its job to ensure all fairy tales reach their rightful ending.
When Red's grandmother is kidnapped by evil forces, it is up to the agency and Red to launch a rescue mission.
With the help of the big bad wolf, Red must summon all her fighting skills to survive and find her grandmother.
She also must get there before Hansel and Gretel (who steal the show) recreate a formula that will give them ultimate evil powers. Despite doubts about her readiness, her love and affection for her grandmother give the plucky Red the drive she needs to succeed.
