Rowie Dillon is a woman on a mission - to save the world from tasteless, unattractive gluten-free boredom.

I have to agree with her ... gluten-free products are often flavourless, savourless ... and, well, plain flat.



With her new book, Indulge, Rowie bumps the bland out of gluten-free, making
delicious cakes and fabulous savoury food easy and accessible to allergy sufferers.

Indulge is full of striking photos, with one recipe per page - a simple, easy-to-follow design.

Chapters cover breakfast, lunch and dinner, pasta, pizza and pastry, cakes and other desserts, plus entertaining and children's parties. There's a special section on using gluten-free flours, which means quiche, lasagne, sausage rolls and cheesecake are back on the menu for those with gluten intolerance.

I'm the sweets person in our family ... along with my Dad, however, the recipes that got me the most excited were the vegetable ones. First on the list was apple, leek and pumpkin gratin ... sublime, perfect for dinner guests and a must for Christmas.

And do not flick past the mushroom-and-basil-stuffed baked onions. On first glance they may look challenging. They're not - and they're delicious. I did, of course, eventually move on to the sweets. I could list every single one as a must try ... but if I had to choose one it would be the orange-and-cardamom syrup cake.

Rowie was diagnosed with gluten intolerance just over 10 years ago and turned her need to eat tasty food into a business.

In 2001, she opened Rowie's cakes, a kitchen that bakes wheat-, yeast-, dairy- and gluten-free pastries.

Rowie challenges the reader to cook their way through her book and "give your family, friends and guests (with allergies or not) the proof that it is possible to create indulgent, simple and yummy gluten-free food". And from what we have tried in the book, it'll be a piece of cake!
