A Danish Red Cross pilot was killed when his plane came under fire over southern Sudan yesterday, dealing a fresh shock to an agency stunned by the murder of six staff in Africa last month.
The Red Cross said a blast rocked the passenger plane after it descended with a cabin pressure problem on a flight from northern Kenya to a Government-held town in southern Sudan encircled by rebels.
"That's when an explosion was heard and the co-pilot died almost instantly with a severe head injury," said Michael Kleiner of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The remaining pilot flew the plane back to Kenya.
Six Red Cross workers were shot and their bodies hacked with machetes in Congo two weeks ago.
