David Beckham reportedly retired from soccer to spend more time with his wife Victoria and their children.
The sports superstar announced the end of his career last week and it is said the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) player did so because his "priorities" have changed.
Beckham, 38, won the Ligue 1 title with the French club and will retire "at the top" of his game after a glittering career, but reports suggest he would have carried on if it wasn't for his family.
An insider told The Sun newspaper: "David was seriously considering another year at PSG - who wouldn't? - but he realised it was best for them as a family to stop now.
"Everything he has said about wanting to leave at the top is true - and it worked out very nicely, winning the French title. But he would have continued.
"The major and deciding factor was Victoria and the kids. Football for David was always a priority. At 38, that has now changed. And rightly so."
Beckham has four children - Brooklyn, 14, Romeo, 10, Cruz, eight, and 21-month-old daughter Harper - with his wife Victoria, and the 39-year-old fashion designer spoke of her pride in her husband's decision.
She wrote on her Twitter account: "Thank you for all your lovely messages, we are so proud of you David, x vb."
The star has enjoyed a hugely successful career, playing and winning titles with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy, A.C. Milan and now Paris Saint-Germain.
