Tasman lock Joe Wheeler has the chance to establish himself at the next level after signing a two-year deal with the Highlanders.

The 23-year-old played four games for the Crusaders, and has 41 provincial caps with Tasman, but has struggled with shoulder and back injuries which have hampered his chances of becoming a Super Rugby regular.

"Joe is a well-rounded player and he will fit well into the culture we have created at the Highlanders," coach Jamie Joseph said. "Also his ability to play as a loose forward gives us additional options in the forward pack."
