A man is fighting for his life and another male is seriously ill after two separate assaults in South Auckland in the early hours of this morning.

Police were called to the first incident, on Great South Rd in Papakura, about 2.40am.

A man in his 60s had been assaulted and was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition, a police spokeswoman said.

Police were continuing a scene examination this morning and had identified two witnesses to the assault. A third person was helping investigators with their inquiries.

Another male is also in a serious condition in hospital after going into cardiac arrest after a fight on Bairds Rd in Otara about 3.15am.

Police attended and are examining the scene, between Fair Mall and Hayman St, this morning.
