State Highway 2 is closed in both directions as police respond to an incident in Lower Hutt.

The incident in Belmont has closed the road from Melling to Kennedy Good Bridge. No detours are in place.

Belmont School principal Robin Thomson said police are using River Rd adjacent to the school as their meeting point, which is close to SH 2.

"They are just about all gone."

Police have assured the school they are not under threat said Thomson.

Residents have taken to social media saying there are police cars and dogs in in the area.

Police have confirmed that SH 2 is now open to traffic following the conclusion of the incident.

The matter was resolved without incident.
