A body has been found in the Tararua Ranges where search teams have been trying to find a missing tramper since earlier this week.

The body was found in the Field Peak area late this afternoon.

It was discovered as specialist search and rescue teams searched for missing tramper, 67-year-old John Arthur. He had been missing since failing to leave the bush as planned on Friday.

Police would not say if the body was that of the missing man, saying the victim's name will be released once family have been told.

"It's been a sad day for search parties and our thoughts are with the victim's family and friends," said Police Search and Rescue Coordinator Sergeant Andy Brooke.

Inquiries were continuing and more information will be released when it becomes available, police said.
