Updated 12.40PM: A neighbour to the property said the scrub fire was nothing major.
"It was more smoke than fire," Jerry Carol said.
He was surprised to see the fire in the middle of winter, he said.
There were currently four fire engines at the site but it was thought the fire would burn itself out.
EARLIER: Fire fighters are working on a large scrub and gorse fire near Ranginui Rd Welcome Bay this morning.
A fire services north communications spokesperson said fire crews are working with two tankers and two high pressure water pumps to put out the fire approximately 75m by 50m in size.
Fire services were called to the blaze just before 10.30am.
More to come.
