A three-year-old boy is in critical condition following a hit-and-run in South Auckland this morning.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said they received the call that a child had been hit by a vehicle in Bairds Rd in Otara about 10am.

"On arrival the patient was in a critical condition and had to be transported to Middlemore Hospital for treatment."

The vehicle fled the scene, he said.

Inspector Earle Mcintosh said the police are still looking for the driver and vehicle involved in the incident.

The vehicle has been described as a dark coloured station wagon or van.
