A jump in level crossing collisions has disappointed former test cricketer and rail safety campaigner Chris Cairns, who has returned from his home in Dubai for Rail Safety Awareness Week starting today.
"So far there have already been 15 collisions this year at level crossings, compared with 20 for the whole of last year," he said. "I find it disturbing that some motorists are not following the warning signs and alarms at level crossings and are putting their lives and their passengers' lives at risk."
His sister Louise was killed in a level crossing accident near Christchurch in 1993.
