A jury has been told that suggestions An An Liu died as a result of an accident during a sexual act were "bizarre".
Prosecutor Aaron Perkins told the jury in the High Court at Auckland that common sense and an avalanche of evidence said Ms Liu was murdered by her husband Nai Yin Xue.
Delivering his closing arguments at Xue's murder trial, Mr Perkins said Xue had earlier threatened to kill her.
Also, he had previously travelled to Wellington with an axe prepared to kill her if she didn't return with him.
There was clear evidence Xue was the man who broke into a house Ms Liu was staying at in Wellington after running away from him, Mr Perkins said.
The landlord Weihong Song gave evidence of a torch being shone in his room about 2.30am, after which he chased the man away with a gun.
Mr Perkins said driving records suggested in 2007 Xue drove to Wellington on July 27, then straight back on July 28.
There was also evidence from Guiquing Jia, who told the court Xue told her he went to Wellington with an axe and that his wife was lucky he didn't find her.
"Is it any wonder that a man who makes that trip with an axe with that mindset, i.e. you come back otherwise I'm going to use an axe -- is it any wonder that a few weeks later she's dead?" Mr Perkins said.
He said defence suggestions during cross-examination that Ms Liu died of auto-erotic asphyxiation during a sexual episode was "nothing short of a bizarre explanation -- that's because there's no-one else to point the finger at".
The Crown said Xue strangled Ms Liu on September 11, 2007, before fleeing New Zealand two days later and abandoning his daughter Qian Xun Xue at a Melbourne train station on September 15, before flying to the United States.
The defence will sum the case up today. The jury was expected to retire tomorrow.
