KEY POINTS:
Police are investigating the death of a man who fell 4m from a ledge beneath a central Auckland bridge yesterday.
The 45-year-old, who is believed to have been homeless, was found by a member of the public on Customs St West about 1.30pm. He was dead when police and ambulance staff arrived.
Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley said the death is being classified as "unusual" until a post mortem examination next week, but there was nothing to indicate the man was pushed.
"The man had been sitting on the ledge when he seems to have fallen backwards off the wall.
"There were others with him at the time, and police are speaking to them to try to establish how it happened.
"The wall is at least 4m high - about twice the height of a very tall person.
"Anyone who fell from there would at least be seriously hurt."
