KEY POINTS:
A West Auckland man who allegedly chased his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend for 8km before the man being pursued crashed into a police station to get help has been denied bail.
Trevor Duff, 28, of Te Atatu, sought to be bailed to a Northland address when he appeared in the North Shore District Court on five charges yesterday. He is accused of cutting the brake lines on the car of his ex-partner Anna Godfrey's new boyfriend, Gavin Downie, then attacking his car with a screwdriver at the weekend before chasing his car through North Shore.
The chase ended only when Mr Downie, who had only a handbrake to slow his car, crashed into the North Shore Policing Centre.
Duff is also accused of intentionally damaging Mr Downie's car, reckless use of a car and assaulting Ms Godfrey.
He faces charges of assault with a weapon, intentionally damaging a car, reckless use of a car and assaulting a female. A charge of intending to cause damage to Mr Downie by interfering with his Hyundai was laid yesterday.
Duff sought to be bailed to an address in Mangawhai, about 80km south of Whangarei, with a curfew, on the condition he not travel further south than Wellsford other than to attend court.
But Judge David Wilson said the alleged victims felt fearful of further harm from Duff and the bail conditions proposed did not in his assessment do enough to address the risk of further offending.
Duff reappears in court on December 4.
