Wellington has made National Geographic's list of Six Unexpected Cities for the Food Lover.

The article claims ''often overshadowed by Auckland, New Zealand's capital holds its own as a food destination''.

It lists Wellington alongside the likes of Budapest, Detroit and Santiago.

Cuba St has been singled out as the Best Neighbourhood for a Food Frenzy, its Logan Brown and Laundry eateries getting special mentions.

Matterhorn also gets a mention, a self-described ''scene of assembly for Wellington's creative cognoscenti''.

Lyall Bay is listed as the Best Neighbourhood for Beach Eats and Harbourside Market on the Waterfront is the best place for people wanting to DIY.
