The deeply idiotic trend emerging on social media this week? Sunburn art.
Social media users are using hashtags like #sunburnart and #tantattoo to show off their sometimes quite intricately-detailed sunburns to the world.
To achieve the look, the sunburn artists selectively apply sunscreen or stickers to their skin before sunbathing until the uncovered skin is sunburnt.
Dermatologists are understandably concerned by the troubling fad, which could lead to skin cancer.
Those participating in the fad are also likely to stay in the sun longer than regular sunbathers to achieve the strong tan lines.
According to Ministry of Health statistics, over 4000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with melanoma each year.
