A pilot turned international drug runner after being diagnosed with terminal cancer has been jailed for almost two years.
Bernhard Stevemuer, 43, was sentenced to 19 months for his role in a $20 million international drug syndicate.
Stevemuer, a Wollongong-based pilot, helped the group buy a plane and fly it from the US to Australia with 35kgs of drugs on board, according to Nine News.
Police raided the company's Albion Park Airport base, located about 100kms south of Sydney, last year, arresting Stevemuer and impounded the plane.
Officers also found $70,000 at Stevemuer's Wollongong home.
The plot has been compared to Breaking Bad - the TV show where high school teacher Walter White became a drug king-pin after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Magistrate Michael Stoddart said Stevemuer's illness was taken into account during sentencing.
Stevemuer launched an appeal immediately following the sentencing, which will be heard later this month.
