Situation:

A low pressure system and its associated front approach the South Island from the northwest tonight, then move east tomorrow, leaving a broad trough over the country. The large trough over the country on Friday moves slowly eastwards. A ridge builds over the South Island during Saturday as a low in the trough crosses the northern North Island. On Sunday, the ridge gradually expands to cover most of New Zealand.
