The walking wounded played a big part in Harcourts 45-40 win over Celtic in their top-of-the-table Wairarapa premier one netball match played at the Colombo Road courts in Masterton on Saturday.
Shooter and player-coach Kelly Sargent was in obvious pain from a wrist problem but that didn't stop her from scoring consistently and utilising her height to pick up several valuable rebounds.
Victoria Green, who had an ankle injury strapped, was the mainstay of a solid Harcourts defence, disputing possession aggressively and making some well-timed intercepts.
Celtic will have been heartened by their strong showing against the playing-through champions.
They were always close enough on the scoreboard to harbour hopes of an upset victory and did enough to suggest this year's premier one series is anything but a one-horse race.
Hope Phillips was reliable in the goal scoring department while player-coach Perri Tatana-Williams shone at centre in the first half and goal attack in the second. Also impressive was the athleticism of Kerewai Tatana on defence.
In other premier one games Pioneer Blue, who play Celtic next week, walloped Trevs 1 71-25, St Matthew's Collegiate scored a surprisingly easy 61-33 win over Martinborough, Wairarapa College edged past Baywide Gladstone 33-31 and Carterton New World Lynx upset Makoura College 33-27.
