Dean Barker describes what went wrong in race eight. That flipping horrible near-flip would have been the end of Team NZ's America's Cup dream. But the boat mercifully came back down. Oracle went on to easily win the race, before Team NZ caught their collective breath and made the start line for Race 9. The challengers were leading and the two boats were neck and neck up the vital third, upwind leg when the wind proved too much and the organisers abandoned the race.

The Springboks have arrived in Auckland fresh from their groundbreaking victory over Australia and have quickly laid on the charm, saying the All Blacks will lose little with Sam Cane playing at No7 instead of Richie. Meyer's team reported no major injuries after the victory, which is more than could be said of the All Blacks who have lost skipper McCaw for four weeks with a medial knee ligament strain after he left the Waikato Stadium pitch during the 28-13 win over the Pumas.
