Masterton business cordoned off after reports of unexploded artillery

A Masterton business was cordoned off this morning after what looked like an unexploded mortar bomb was discovered.

Police went to the scene at Wairarapa Scrap Metals on Ngaumutawa Rd, along with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).

A NZDF spokesperson confirmed an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team investigated and the artillery was inert.

“Until these items are deemed safe by a subject matter expert, caution should be applied.

“If you discover an item that you believe may be dangerous remain clear of the item and contact NZ Police as soon as possible.”

Janice O’Brien, one of the owners of Wairarapa Scrap Metals, said her son discovered what he thought looked like a mortar round this morning.

Everyone evacuated the premises, she said earlier.

“It’s quite small, we don’t know if it’s live but you’ve got to assume these things.

“It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
