Oram was the inaugural editor of the Business Herald, which was launched in 1997. He came to New Zealand from the UK, where he worked for The Financial Times of London.

Murray Kirkness, NZME editor-in-chief, said the NZME team was deeply saddened to hear of his death.
“Many of our journalists, past and present, worked closely with Rod during his time as NZ Herald Business Editor in the late 90s and throughout his career. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.”
