Dunedin resident Pim Allen has decided an empty paddock is no place for a lonely donkey.
She's looking for suitable equine companions for her two pets Hoti and Travis.
Hoti, (15) and Travis (4) have been inseparable from the first day they met. Owner Pim says they make great pets, are easy to care for and don't deserve the reputation of being stubborn animals.
She has even managed to train them to go into their float by touching their noses with a tennis ball.
Like any equine these gentle and intelligent animals do need a bit of work says Allen, but they don't need a lot of grass or "they eat themselves silly and get fat and that can be dangerous."
Although Hoti and Travis are firm friends, they are looking for more companions and Allen says she has received a lot of interest from fellow donkey owners.
