After some years of concentrated effort on the grounds, gates and fences, Tom felt the time has come to resume work on such railway items as the workingmen's huts, rolling stock and track.
"The precinct attracts visitors from all over New Zealand and around the world as it is," he said.
"But with more work on restoring the running gear and operating items such as the signals and the yard crane, the whole site will appeal even more to railway enthusiasts and will offer the general public a much more complete story of the role of the railways in building New Zealand."
At the moment there is self-catering accommodation in the station building and in two of the little huts, which helps to pay some of the running costs. However, more huts can be restored and upgraded.
"We are sure there are some handy tradesmen and retirees who could help us out - without feeling they have to commit themselves fulltime. Working bees are usually once a month on the second Saturday of the month, but there is some flexibility [often driven by weather].
"We are looking for qualified tradesmen and DIY volunteers because much can be - and has been - achieved with such general help.
"So are you a handyman, painter, mower, engineer or such like? We are a diverse and cheerful band of people with our oldest member being over 90 - still gardening and cooking lunches for the team."
The group runs interesting slide and film shows in the evenings after work, on a range of subjects. A treasurer would also be welcome.
"As the former mayor of Tararua I believe we have something special here to restore and alongside Don Selby and his valiant team at Pahiatua with their railcar, we can make sure Tararua leads from the front.
"Do not be scared to give us a phone call and have a chat as we would be grateful for some fresh help, so that we can advance to new and exciting objectives and so we have new things to offer on another great day in two years' time - something to aim for and look forward to.
"We are also looking for members to support the restoration. Membership is not onerous apart from filling in a form and we would be grateful whoever you are or wherever you live if you could help us to Save Ormondville Station."
