Protesters were a no-show at this year's Park lee Bull Riding event held at the Central Hawke's Bay A and P Show in Waipukurau on Saturday.
Central Hawke's Bay A and P Show president, Chris Munoz's, thanked the groups who protested during the build-up to the event, as the crowd was larger than last year's.
"I think we actually got a bumper crowd, it was the most we have had attend the event and we were actually a bit disappointed that none of the protesters turned up."
A petition led by animal welfare groups and supported by 62,000 New Zealanders concerned about the cruelty to animals, had recently been submitted to the Government but it was announced last week no action would be taken.
In response the groups were asking people to boycott rodeos in the upcoming season and SAFE had encouraged people to boycott the one in Waipukurau.
New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys Association, North Island club director, Shane Bird, said an inspector from the SPCA and Central Hawke's Bay manager, Renee Hickey, watched the event closely.
"They both watched from the time the bulls were unloaded to when they were put on the truck and they gave us nothing but positive feedback. They did what other groups should do, get first-hand experience rather than spread rumours."
"There were no major injuries to animals or riders, it was an outstanding day."
Mr Bird agreed with Mr Munoz's and said there was no doubt these groups drew the crowds.
"It went so well, we had the biggest crowd there ever and the weather was great, the bulls were great and so were the riders."
SAFE head of campaigns, Mandy Carter, said the increase in the number of people did not mean more people supported it.
"I am interested to know by how many it increased, as from our latest polls only 25 per cent supported rodeo. I think they are clutching their straws," Ms Carter said.
Mr Munoz's, said the annual three day event was a huge success, as the gates closed on Saturday.
"Our numbers through the gates were up on last year and we had three world class shearers fly up from the Christchurch show. They wouldn't fly up here if it was not worth coming to."
The show had everything from bull riding, fencing and shearing to Masons Amusement, trade exhibits and vintage cars.
There were also dog trials, the top team challenge, the CHB show challenge, equestrian events and wool handling.
Mr Munoz's said there was not one section you could pull out, as all areas went so well.
"Everyone enjoyed themselves and I had a lot of people say how lovely our grounds were. It was a good three days."
"It has been a good season and year for our A and P show."
Central Hawke's Bay SPCA manager, Renee Hickey, could not be contacted last night.
