Chardonnay vines which led to Te Awanga winery Clearview Estate taking out a competition prize 29 years ago turned up trumps again at the recent Hawke's Bay A&P Bayleys Wine Awards.
The Clearview Reserve 2015 Chardonnay took the competition's Chardonnay Trophy to the delight of winery co-owners and co-founders Tim Turvey and Helma van den Berg.
As well as showing the enduring qualities of the vines over nearly three decades, the latest win also added to the growing chardonnay honours for the winery at the awards, which began at the inaugural event in 2001 where Clearview picked up the Champion Wine of Show with a chardonnay.
"Our first release in 1992 of reserve chardonnay using fruit from the same vines planted 29 years ago won a trophy so it is gratifying to know we have maintained the quality and consistency of our flagship wine over a quarter of a century," Mr Turvey said.
The latest win comes hot on the heels of the Reserve 2015 Chardonnay also winning Champion Wine of the Show and Champion Chardonnay at the New Zealand International Wine Awards earlier this month, with their Beachhead 2015 also taking out Best Chardonnay of the Show at the New World Wine Awards.
