Stock buyers in Feilding veered away from prime hoggets showing adult teeth, dropping their price around $60 a head.

Stock buyers in Feilding veered away from prime hoggets showing adult teeth, dropping their price around $60 a head.

The usual question regarding how much longer will the large Monday sale sheep yardings continue was asked again at the Feilding Prime Stock Sale this week and, with a "short" week to complicate matters next week, the simple answer is nobody knows.

Nearly 5000 hoggets were yarded again yesterday, and even more attention was paid to adult teeth this week.

The reason for this careful mouthing is that it does not just affect store hoggets but, with killing space at the meat works very tight again, buyers of prime hoggets do not want them around for too long.

Once again, this week, erupted adult teeth resulted in a sale price drop of around $60/head.

The buying ranks were shallower again this week, and hogget sale prices eased back by around $5/head.

The top money paid was similar at $142.50 for 48 shorn ram hoggets from G Checkley but the very heavy male hoggets were hard selling and even the medium trade lambs were pulled back this week.

Store hoggets also eased, as may be expected as time passes.

Two pens of earlier-born spring lambs were sold first with Mirawei Farm selling 20 for $132 and J Sutherland selling 11 for $131.

These sale prices seemed to be about what the observers expected with some annual lines due in soon.

More ewes were offered as the wet/dries are removed from the docking flocks and ewe prices remained fairly steady with buyers operating generally within their preferred weight ranges.

It was another small and quick cattle sale with little to report. Prime Jersey cross cows sold up to $2.20/kg with boner cows steady and 3 forward Hereford/Friesian heifers made $2.78/kg. There were no bulls and only one lighter steer.

Sheep (6783): lambs (31), 38-40kg, $131-$132, $3.30; hoggets (4927); prime (4589), 40-60kg, $105-$142.50, $2.35-$2.70, ease; store (338), 31-37kg, $79-$112, $2.55-$3.00, ease; ewes (1743); good, heavy, 26-32kg, $83-$100, $3.10-$3.30, steady; medium, 21-25kg, $60-$83, $2.90-$3.30, steady; lighter, 17-20kg, $46-$61, $2.70-$3.00, steady; 2ths (48), $60-$88; male sheep (34), $41-$56.
Cattle (33): steer (1), 450kg, $1057, $2.35; heifers (4), 486kg, $1353, $2.78; lesser sorts, 490kg, $931, $1.90; cows (28); good, 420kg, $931, $2.20; boners, 405-570kg, $705-$1037, $1.69-$1.87, steady; lesser sorts, 410-500kg, $313-$620, $1.24-$1.31.

Manfeild Park Calf Sale

The numbers dropped right back to 50 calves for this sale yesterday and the market eased. The majority of these calves would not be weaned by Christmas and there is a reduced demand for these types.

This is the last sale at Manfeild Park and, from next week, calf sales will be under cover at the Feilding saleyards.

Bulls: Friesian; good, $45-$55; W/F; good, $170-$190; medium, $100-$125.
Heifers: W/F; good, $100-$140; medium, $70-$85.
