Area Description:

Bay of Plenty

Situation:

A slow moving front lies over the northeast of the North Island today and tomorrow. While a low and a trough approach from the southwest and moves onto the South Island this afternoon. The trough weakens tomorrow and a ridge of high pressure moves onto the South Island. Tropical Cyclone Vaianu is expected to approach Northland late on Saturday, then move gradually southwards across the North Island during Sunday. This is likely to bring a period of impactful heavy rain and damaging gales to much of central and northern New Zealand.

For Bay of Plenty:

Today: Northeast 20 knots gusting 30 knots. Becoming northerly 25 knots gusting 35 knots this afternoon. Easing to northerly 20 knots west of Moutoki Island this evening. Sea becoming rough for a time. Rain with very poor visibility in possible downpours. Possible thunderstorms from afternoon. Northeast swell 2.5 metres easing to 2 metres.

Thursday: Northerly 25 knots gusting 35 knots but 20 knots west of Moutoki Island. Becoming northerly 20 knots everywhere in the morning, then easing to 15 knots in the evening. Rain. Northerly swell 2 metres easing.

Friday: Variable 5 knots, becoming easterly 15 knots early. Showers. Northerly swell rising to 2 metres for a time.

Saturday: Southeast 20 knots. A few showers developing. Northeast swell rising to 4 metres.
