William Pike's road to recovery

Auckland schoolteacher William Pike lost a leg when Mt Ruapehu's crater lake spilled over in 2007, sending a lahar rushing down the mountain side and crushing his leg under debris. Now, he has returned to the mountain which nearly claimed his life. In these images, <I>Herald on Sunday</I> photographer Doug Sherring traces Pike's road to recovery.
