Up to $5 million is needed to get Wellington's Embassy Theatre ready for the promised world premiere of the third Lord of the Rings movie in December.
The distributors announced Wellington as the venue for the world premiere at December's Australasian premiere of The Two Towers.
It is estimated the event will be worth $10 million in new spending to Wellington, and $25 million in advertising worldwide.
Embassy Theatre Trust chairman Bill Sheat said the prospect of the world premiere was "a useful carrot" to inspire fundraising for the renovations.
What is needed? Well, the installation of a lift, new seats, toilets, air-conditioning and heating, a remodelled arch around the screen, and new front doors in keeping with the original 1924 designs.
