I was walking with a friend through Hastings at the weekend when a boy on a bicycle stopped in front of us and asked, "Got 80 cents, Miss?" My friend replied "no" and got the response, "Well f*** you then", and he rode off. Nice image of the country's most beautiful city.

What a treasure we have in Auckland with Eden Gardens. We have just visited for Tulip Sunday to view the most dazzling display of tulips and flowering magnolias and rhododendrons, underplanted with hellebores and spring bulbs. Very cute little Asian chickens forage among the plants. This garden is run with mainly voluntary labour - their efforts deserve recognition.

Why are ships allowed to leave Auckland harbour before 6am while blowing their horrendously noisy foghorns continuously for the next hour? I don't even live close to the water but can still hear them. Instead of waking thousands of people, surely the boats can leave at a more reasonable hour?

A big thank-you to the young man at Repco Parts Mt Roskill who supplied an elderly customer with a new set of hubcaps. He measured the wheels first, then unpacked the box and assembled the parts and last of all he fitted them to my car. Wonderful service.

When supermarkets have a special on a product, why don't the suppliers ensure they have plenty of stock. All too often we are met with empty shelves and miss out.

On August 28, my husband got hopelessly lost in Remuera. He left me in the carpark at 1.45pm to go for a walk. (I was at a rest home entertaining the residents with a dance group.) He was to be back at 2.45pm when the show finished. I waited until about 3.40pm, wondering where on earth he could be. (He had no cellphone.) Then a white Range Rover pulled up and out hopped my husband. This woman, with her children, had put herself out by running him around the streets, looking for our meeting place at Ventnor Rd. My husband had not taken notice of the name of the rest home or the street names. This is to thank the lovely English woman for all her help.
