Police have charged a 23-year-old Hamilton man with assault in relation to the death of a man in central Hamilton early yesterday.
The Fijian-Indian man in his 40s was found dead on the footpath in Alexandra St in central Hamilton about 3.20am yesterday. His name has not been released yet as family have not been told.
Yesterday police charged a man with assault in relation to the attack. He was given police bail and is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Friday.
Detective Inspector Peter Devoy said the dead man had been involved in an argument -- not a fight -- with another person on Alexandra St. Before that, he had been at a bar in Hamilton.
"We have spoken to a number of people who were in the area at the time, but we believe there may have been more people who may have seen something that is relevant to our inquiry," Mr Devoy said.
An autopsy was being done today.
The man's death came after a series of fights in the city centre.
A Hamilton bar manager said earlier there had been several fights, some of them gang-related.
One fight is reported to have involved several Fijians and a gang member, near a bar about 1am.
