Rotorua police have received more clues about a body found in a burning car after receiving information about a missing person who lives outside the area.
A post-mortem examination carried out on the body was unsuccessful at identifying the sex of the deceased because of the extent of the burns.
The person was found inside a car just south of Rotorua on Saturday morning.
Police are now awaiting results of a further DNA test which are expected by next Monday for more information.
Detective Senior Sergeant Loper says they've spoken to the family and friends of the missing person who are assisting with information.
He says they're still treating the incident as suspicious until further testing proves otherwise.
