Whangaparaoa – A storyteller’s story

Alan Sayers started work as a reporter at the NZ Herald about 75 years ago – but turned to photography when he picked up a camera to cover for an otherwise absent picture desk during a huge fire. Sayers greatest stories are everybody else’s. He was there for legends including Hillary and Fred the Needle. He also took the first 35mm news picture used in New Zealand when he disguised himself as a choir member to sneak into the cathedral and pap the ordination of a new bishop – very paparazzi for 1940.
