A $6.2 million roading revamp to remove a notorious Whangarei bottleneck should start this winter.
The project will improve traffic for the thousands of motorists who pass through the Town Basin area each day.
Whangarei District Council's roading manager Jeff Devine said the council would pay $2.73 million of the $6.7 million project and Government road funder Transfund would pay the rest.
Mr Devine said the first stage of the project would be to add two more lanes to the 1950s era Victoria Bridge which currently carries traffic out of the city towards the suburb of Onerahi.
"For decades people have enjoyed the ornate concrete work and light standards on the bridge and we want to retain these features."
Another bridge currently bringing traffic across the Hatea River into Whangarei will be closed and a major intersection will be built on the current A&P building's site.
