Former National Party president Michelle Boag is part of a team starting a new "upmarket" newspaper on Waiheke Island.
From next month the Waiheke Week, a full-colour tabloid, will be delivered free to about 3500 homes on the island.
Waiheke already has two locally produced newspapers.
The new paper is being published to take advantage of the changing demographics on the island and its growing economy, say its shareholders - Ms Boag, her husband, Mervyn Bennett, and their friend Bruce Plested.
All live on Waiheke.
"We've found a niche market on the island, so I don't think we'll be competing with the other papers," Mr Bennett said.
He said the new paper would be pretty upmarket.
Ms Boag said the paper was an investment for her, "so I will not be writing anything".
"I only get sick of the media when they make mistakes and I can guarantee you this newspaper will not be making them."
Mr Bennett was a director of aluminium company Comalco for 25 years, and Mr Plested is a founder of the transport company Mainfreight. Former Wellington Dominion Post reporter Heather Wright has been appointed editor.
