Multimillion-dollar x-ray machines may be used to strengthen security at New Zealand's eight international ports.
Comptroller of Customs Robin Dare said Australia was spending millions on giant machines to x-ray cargo containers and New Zealand Customs was looking at mobile machines before presenting a recommendation to the Government.
He said there was little to stop a terrorist group from sending a container full of explosives to any country in the world.
The machines could cost $6 million each.
